A Family Returns: Our Mom Eugenia Is Coming to Bethesda

For nearly a decade, loyal fans have been making the drive across the Potomac to reach Our Mom Eugenia — the family-owned Greek restaurant that quietly became one of the most respected dining names in Northern Virginia. That trip is about to get a lot shorter.

Bethesda Today confirmed on March 12 that Our Mom Eugenia will open its first Maryland location this fall at Westbard Square, occupying the development's central standalone restaurant building at 5315 Zenith Overlook. It will be the brand's fourth location overall, and by any measure, its most personal.

A Decade in the Making

Our Mom Eugenia was founded in December 2016 by brothers Alexander and Philip Hobson alongside their mother, Eugenia — the restaurant's namesake and executive chef. She was born and raised on the Greek island of Zakynthos, where she learned to cook by watching her grandmother in the kitchen. That foundation has shaped everything on the menu: avgolemono, the traditional egg-and-lemon chicken soup. Tyrokafteri, a spicy whipped feta dip. Saganaki, moussaka, loukoumades. Classic dishes, executed with the discipline of a chef who has spent 30 years getting them right.

The restaurant earned early recognition from the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and a string of regional publications. It expanded to Mosaic District in Fairfax in 2020 — during the height of the pandemic — and to Shirlington in Arlington in 2023. Through it all, a contingent of Bethesda, Potomac, and Chevy Chase regulars has been making the cross-river trek.

"We had guests that come in from Bethesda, Palisades, Potomac," co-owner Alexander Hobson told Bethesda Today. "We were just waiting for the right opportunity."

The Bethesda opening is also a personal homecoming. Eugenia Hobson worked as a chef at local Greek restaurants earlier in her career — including Athenian Plaka on Woodmont Avenue and Mykonos Grill in Rockville. The Westbard location arrives coinciding with the restaurant's 10th anniversary. It is, as the family put it on their website, "a full-circle moment."

What to Expect at Westbard Square

The Bethesda restaurant will span 2,400 square feet and feature a 14-seat bar, a range of indoor dining configurations, and a 1,000-square-foot four-season outdoor patio — covered, ventilated in summer, and heated in winter. That patio detail matters in a market where year-round outdoor dining has become a genuine differentiator.

The standalone building sits within Westbard Square, the multiphase redevelopment of the former Westwood Shopping Center. The surrounding retail includes Giant Food, Piccoli Piatti Pizzeria, Silver & Sons BBQ, Starbucks, and Tatte Bakery & Café. The full development — encompassing townhomes, a multifamily apartment building, central green space, and a senior assisted living community — is expected to be complete by 2027.

Construction at the restaurant is expected to begin within the next few months, with a target opening before the 2026 holiday season.
